It was the noise again. Always the noise.

The sound of glass smashing, of something rampaging. It threw Cam right back to that first morning, when he’d had to get Becky out of their home, away from—

Several weeks ago; time had marched on like it always had, always did. He’d more or less kept them safe in that span, kept them away from trouble as much as he could. But it was becoming increasingly clear the creatures out there were turning their attention to them, to people who were younger than the adults they’d murdered.

Now they were the hunted. A food source primarily, as far as Cam could tell. Which meant you had to be clever about things, lay low and not draw attention to yourself. Also meant it was a really bad idea to take on board stragglers, no matter how much your sister begged you to do so.

Which brought them back again to Tim.

Tim who they’d stumbled across when they were breaking into a mini-mart to get provisions for the day. Tim who’d been hiding behind the shelves, up the next aisle over from theirs. They’d thought he was one of them, but as he explained after they’d caught their breath again, he’d ducked in here to escape those things—waiting it out until they’d passed.

Tim, all blonde wavy hair, dimples in each cheek. Exactly Becky’s type—male!—which she didn’t even attempt to hide… He’d asked if he could tag along with them, and at first, Cam had given him a resounding: no! They didn’t need dead weight, another person to watch out for, or who might make a mistake to bring those creatures down on them. But Becky had talked him around, reminded him they hadn’t really come across anyone else this whole time. Said it might make things easier to have three of them, one to keep watch on raids like this, and two to fill bags. He didn’t even try to raise the point that it also meant another mouth to feed, it wouldn’t have mattered, anyway—not when Becky sat down on the ground and refused to budge until Tim came with them.

“Fine, you go then, if you’re so pig-headed. I’m staying!”

Staying—with a guy she’d just met! But then that was Becky all over, wasn’t it? They were her Achilles heel. And how many times had she bawled her eyes out, sitting with him or with Dad…with her dad, because some guy she’d liked hadn’t liked her back, or had treated her like crap? But still she kept going back for more… He’d stuck to his guns at the beginning when she’d wanted to go off after whatshisname, Ash. She didn’t even know where he was, let alone whether he was alive or dead—and on that occasion it had been Cam who’d made her cry. But this time, she seemed determined.

Well, if she was staying, so was he. Cam had a responsibility to her, to protect her. Whether that was from those beasts out there, or—

He’d sighed loudly and said, “Fine.
